The 109 music video is an experimental exploration of grief, loss, and memory through the metaphor of travel and public place. This brief was born from a conversation between Elsie (the musician) and I when discussing her song. It was born from the ethos of her song and songwriting process, of my limitations as a student filmmaker operating during a pandemic, and from the gaps in the Melbourne music video scene.
I opted to create a piece entirely without a protagonist, often placing the camera where a reverse shot of where a character may be. The piece progresses throughout the course of a day, as the viewer gets further and further away from the city. As it does so, the piece becomes more chaotic and undone; the quality and resolution of the image starts to deteriorate, and reality gives way entirely at the songs climax.

As you grieve someone, some thing, some time, some place, your memory becomes warped. You move further outside of the experience of the thing as you move away from it through time. But people, things, moments, and places are not to be owned. The only thing you posses, really ever, is your memory. They are yours and not yours, everyones and no ones - just like a public place, or a tram.

109 was filmed with a Canon 5D MIII, Sony A7, Sony HandyCam DCR-SX65, and Canon 600D, and edited entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro.
